Oteil Burbridge and Roots Rock Revival jam coast-to-coast

Two-time Grammy-winning bassist Oteil Burbridge played in Dead & Company’s concerts in San Francisco this month to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, but that didn’t stop him from jamming and teaching at the “Roots Rock Revival” camp in upstate New York, 2900 miles away.

Retreat to Music is a nonprofit that was part of the team that made the magic happen. Here’s what they had to say:

“A very sincere, personal shoutout and THANK YOU to our friends at @farplayapp – this app, paired with their TOP DRAWER tech support, made this concept a reality. We are so grateful for the insight and passion you put into making a real-time communication platform that is accessible to everyone.”

Stop instruments from cutting out

Does the sound from instruments cut out even though speech sounds clear? We previously explained how to fix this on PCs by turning Windows Signal Enhancements off. On Macs, set the Mic Mode to Standard, as attendees at our monthly support session Saturday, July 19th, 2025 found out. Learn more at our blog.

Interested in live tech support? Signups are still open for this month’s support session today, Saturday, August 23rd 2:00pm-3:30pm New York time / 8:00pm-9:30pm Central European time. Our following session will be Saturday, September 13th 2:00pm-3:30pm New York time / 8:00pm-9:30pm Central European time. Monthly tech-support sessions are available free to paid subscribers and students of FarPlay For Teachers subscribers.

  1. I am part of a community singing group who would like an online option for those who cant make it to the venue on practice nights. I see the subscription can “register x devices”. We have up to 5 people joining online at any practice but they are not always the same people. Is there flexibility to have any 5 people joining or does the subscription mean it will only register 5 specific people on 5 specific PCs?

    1. Thanks for your message.

You don’t need to register guests/visitors. As long as one member of your group gets a subscription, the sessions that person creates can be joined by multiple other singers at the same time, even if none of those other singers sign up for FarPlay accounts. With fast connections, FarPlay is great for sessions of up to about 8 musicians (we know of a group who sometimes rehearses with 10+ musicians). We recommend fiber or cable connections with at least 50 Mbps of upload speed (you can still get good results with upload speeds of about 20 Mbps, but faster is better).

The device authorizations you’re talking about let a subscriber use their subscription on more than one computer. For example a music teacher might use two of their device authorizations to authorize both their home computer and a computer at a music school. This way, they don’t have to logout of FarPlay on one computer when they want to create a session using the other computer. Thank you,
      David Liao
